Sourcing And Buying Rebuilt Engines

By Jennifer Cole

When your vehicle breaks down and the problem is serious, a repair may not solve the problems and you will have to replace the motor. When this occurs you may have to find and purchase rebuilt engines to get the vehicle up and running. You will usually save hundreds if not thousands of dollars by using a reconditioned unit.

There are a few places to start looking for a replacement engine for your car, bike or pick up. Buying a brand new manufacturer engine is extremely expensive and many firms now offer an affordable alternative. Most vehicles that are in production and a large number of older models will have a suitable unit available that is ready to install.

Thousands of bucks can be saved by purchasing a rebuilt motor, and having it fitted, and they are very reliable. A small engine for a motorcycle will cost around twelve hundred dollars, and a larger one for cars and trucks, will be around six thousand. The majority of the companies that supply units will offer a warranty, and this will usually be three to five years, or based on the mileage.

The first place to look for a reconditioned unit is an auto store or spares shop in your local area. The majority of stores will have suitable units in their stock that are ready to be fitted. The benefits of outlets such as these are that their experienced sales staff will be available to advise you on your purchase and answer any queries.

A lot of customers will decide to purchase a unit from a web based supplier and there are hundreds available. Most of the sites are well established and will have what you need to get your vehicle running again. You will have to pay shipping costs but these web suppliers will usually be cheaper than a high street retailer due to lower overheads.

A useful option for many, when buying a replacement motor, is to search local re cycling yards. Huge cash savings can often be made by buying a unit from one of these places and discounts may be offered if you leave your unit for them to rebuild. Any used components should be properly checked by a technician to ensure they meet safety regulations.

In some cases, a complete unit may not be required, and individual parts can be fitted. Most of the companies that offer reconditioned engines will also stock complete head units, crankshafts and casings. If you are only replacing a single component it is a good idea to take your existing part with you to make a comparison and maybe exchange.

Installing an engine is a specialized job and will take a fair amount of time and it will require some specialist equipment. A lot of home mechanics will choose to the job but it is preferable to get a professional engineer to do the work. This will ensure that any future failures are covered by the guarantees provided.
