Important Information About Cable Lugs

By Jamal D White

Cable lugs are important devices that are useful in connecting cables to other cables and electrical appliances. A cable lug may sometimes be referred to as a cable connector or cable anchor; although this will depend on the specific industry and its application. A good example of a cable lug is the clamp that usually connects wires to an auto motive battery. These devices are usually designed for ease in installation and removal in case of maintenance and repairs. Cable lugs are actually useful in areas where permanent fastening methods may not be feasible.

Cables and wires can be used with the respective cable lugs. However, most people use cable and wires interchangeable even if they are different. This is because a cable refers to several wires while a wire is a single strand.

Cable connectors are usually made of varied materials, which usually vary depending on their application. However, the common types of lugs are those made of copper. Copper is usually preferred if the cable lug is used for electrical purposes since copper is a good conductor of electricity.

One end of the cable lug is usually used for connecting the cable that may be welded or crimped while the other end is fastened to a matching terminal by use of a screw, spring clip or bold. There are usually different types of sizes and configurations of the cable lugs; hence, you are sure to find something that is suitable for whatever use you have in mind.

The connector side of the cable is generally selected based on its compatibility with the terminal. For instance, fork lugs are appropriate for screw devices, closed rings are the most useful when utilizing bolts while pin lugs are the most useful when making use of bin terminals. Therefore, you have to select an appropriate cable connector with respect to the terminal. A cable lug may also be very helpful in reducing the size of a cable, and this makes it relatively easy to have thick cables that can be mounted easily on a cable of a smaller diameter.

Cable lugs are mainly used for electrical connections although other more powerful versions are helpful in anchoring non-electrical cables with other cables, mounting plates or any other surfaces. Safety cables like that that may be utilized in rigging are often fitted with cable lugs for transporting different types of items. You will probably discover that battery cable lugs are utilized in rigging to ensure that the battery can run the lugs. These lugs are often made from iron or steel to ensure that they are more powerful. Generally, cable lugs for electrical use are usually made from brass, aluminums, lead or copper. They are also plated to boost and optimize current transfer.

Cable lugs may be found in various places. You can find them in household appliances, cars, and electronics. The cable rugs that are mainly used in electronics are usually insulated with rubber or plastic to avoid electrical conductivity to various things around.

Cable lugs are of different types; some of which include aluminum lugs, copper lugs and fork lugs. The different types can be used for various purposes. Thus, you are sure of finding a cable lug for whatever you want to use it for.
