Get some practice approaching objects on the water. Place a life ring or cushion float and try approaching it. Start at low speed and increase it as you become more confident. Try getting as close as possible to the object and then turn your vessel away without knocking it. This exposure is very important as it equips you with skills that help negotiate round objects that may pop up suddenly at sea.

Make proper plans well in advance of the trip. This will help you find out what you need during the cruise. If you do things in a hurry, you may leave behind some of the things you need. This might compromise your safety and spoil your time on the waterways. As an experienced boat handler, you will always have your boat ready with all the requirements.

It should be noted that if the object is astern and therefore close to the propellers, the engine can be a source of danger. The engine should be in neutral mode. If left running it can suck the object or person being rescued resulting into damage to your craft or loss of life.

When people are out at sea, they encounter various conditions. You should be able to react well in each one of them. Therefore, you need to practice how to react to save lives of your passengers and avoid losing your craft. The more you practice your skills the better they will be.
