By Fred Gagnon

If you could fix your television or computer by yourself without taking it to a repair specialist, would you do it? Of course- it saves time and money! The same applies to your car. Read this article for tips on how to learn simple auto repair in order to save yourself a headache.

Do you have a hard time starting your car? Your battery probably needs to be recharged or replaced. You need to check the state of charge of your battery. You can use a hydrometer or a voltmeter depending on the type of battery you have. If you have been regularly recharging your battery, it might be time for a new one.

If your car door and hatch locks tend to become stiff, avoid breaking your key off in the lock by lubricating them periodically with a penetrating oil spray. You can use the plastic extender that comes with the spray can to deliver oil to the interior of the locking mechanism. If you have misplaced this extender, just spray your key liberally and turn it in the stiff lock several times.

Regular washing of your car will help prevent it from rusting. All cars are going to rust, so make sure that you wash your vehicle at least once a month. Protect your paint with good wax.

Don't neglect your regular maintenance. These scheduled visits are not there just to get more money from you. They are designed to make sure maintenance is done on specific components before you end up stranded on the side of the road. While you might be able to skip one or two and be okay, the damage will shorten the life of your car.

Put together an auto repair kit and keep it in your trunk. Your tool kit should have equipment to change a tire and other necessary items. If you lack a lug wrench and a jack, purchase both. Also have a few tools like a socket set, both a regular and Phillips head screwdriver, a crescent wrench and a torque wrench. Do not waste money by getting cheap tools. Get high quality tools that will be able to withstand the test of time.

As said in the beginning of this article, learning how to repair things on your own makes life much easier in the long run. Besides saving money, you can get a sense of pride from fixing your car yourself. Remember the tips in this article so you can use auto repair whenever you need it!
