Information About Unmanned Surface Vessel Manufacturers

By Shirley Stevens

The other name given to unmanned surface vessels (USV) is autonomous surface vessels (ASV). These are floating kind of platforms that allow human to operate without their presence on board. It was during the Second World War when the issue of unmanned vessels began and researchers started working on it after the war. Technological developments and user needs have gone hand-in-hand with this idea advancing. Today, the number of unmanned surface vessel manufacturers is very high.

The necessity of USVs has become apparent not just in the military, but also in the field of science. Today, anybody is allowed to own a USV and there are no mandatory rules that one must meet in order to own the drone. In science, these vessels are used to perform a wide range of scientific and research operations. Modern vessels are multi-functionality, and they offer more comfort and safety to users.

These vessels have made it possible for water bodies to be explored with 100 percent safety levels. An ASV can be used to explore water bodies that can prove risky for humans or animals to explore. Rest is not needed for these vessels since they are machines and they also cannot turn down a job unlike human beings.

The use of ASVs is becoming more scientific in their use even though their initial development was meant for military operations. In cases of their marine operations, versatility of the model is well considered when building these vessels. Induction of USVs has made a revolution in the way in which water is being exploited. Oceanographic measurements are among the major functions that these vessels can perform.

There are a number of operations that make up oceanographic measurements. These include chemistry, hydrographic data, bathymetry, ship wreck survey, currents, water monitoring, salinity measurement, structure inspection and earthquake prediction. They are also used for air and atmospheric measurement applications. Operations that make up these measurements include humidity, surface winds, sea surface temperature and temperature. Before a hurricane occurs, its path can be predicted by a USV.

Weather forecasting missions are also performed in the waters using USVs. Many militaries around the globe heavily use USVs for weather forecasting and various other operations. Some of the major military applications of USVs include mine detection, military training and security, reconnaissance, mine-hunting, and coastal surveillance. In many cases, militaries use USVs to accompany an underwater vessel such as a submarine. In this case, the job of the USV is to offer support communications and precision location and navigation.

A lot of improvements are continuously being done in these vessels. Manufacturers are trying to add as many features into these vessels as possible to make them more functional. Major developments are being done in the shape of the hulls to improve efficiency and safety of people onboard.

For vessels at sea that require static behavior and speed, SWATH concept has proven to be effective. SWATH has made it possible for vessels to be more stable and have the ability to survive severe conditions in water. These improvements have made it possible for militaries and researchers to carry out their duties more effectively.
