Cleaning Your Car's Upholstery

By Cornelius Nunev

Don't let your vehicle's interior sit dirty.

Cars are for driving

The simplest way to help keep your automobile clean is to not juggle food, drinks, reading materials, telephones, grooming appliances, makeup and toys. Pay attention to the road and keep both hands on the wheel. If you have to break into your stash of distractions, pull over so that you can devote your full attention.

Everything needs vacuumed

Just like you regularly vacuum your home, you need to regularly vacuum your vehicle. Vacuum underneath all the mats and on top of them if they need it. Use the different parts to make sure you get all the nooks and crannies. This day-to-day maintenance is essential. It makes it harder for grime to set in when the upholstery fibers are upright, which happens whenever you vacuum.

You can defend your car with stain repellents such as Scotchguard. Even if you think it is just a little bit costly, it is worth it in the end.

Washing leather

You will only need leather cleaner for your car if you get a deep set stain from something such as ink or nail polish. The cleaner and a soft sponge can get it out. Always avoid goods that are not intended for leather though. One thing to always remember is that leather cleaner is not necessary for regular maintenance. A damp towel works well, especially since leather is usually water resistant already. Just clean up messes quickly, and also you will not have any troubles.

Cleaning other things

There are a lot of other things in the car, such as vinyl and rubber that need to be cleaned. It could be a good idea to get an interior protectant in order to help with the vinyl and rubber to shield them from sun damage. If you use baking soda on a damp rag, you can clean vinyl easily. Just make sure you use dishwashing detergent and water to rinse it afterwards.

More about upholstery cleaning

Dilute coffee spills with cool water and blot. If the spot stays, soak with glass cleaner and blot dry after 5 minutes

If you are facing greasy stains, make sure you test the remedy in a small area and then use it. You can just put paint thinner and salt or cornmeal on the spot overnight. After the night is over, vacuum it clean

Use hairspray or salt on pen ink stains in carpeting

Use club soda or baking soda and water on vomit to dilute and neutralize the acid content

Getting rid of blood is simple with dry laundry starch and cold water mixtures. Just put it over the blood and let dry. Vacuum in the morning

Dilute alcohol spills with cold water

Brighten fading carpet by first vacuuming, then sponging it lightly with clear ammonia and water. The mixture is a half-cup of ammonia to one pint of water. Note: Don't use ammonia on wool carpet

Getting rid of fleas and flea eggs will take two applications of Borax. Just let it sit for an hour and vacuum. It will even get rid of smelly carpet

Static carpets could be rid with a fabric softener/water mixture. Just mix five parts water with one part softener

If you are sick of carpet imprints, you can use iron on low over a damp towel to get rid of it. You can melt things if you leave the iron there though.

Keep the mats on your car looking good with liquid shoe wax polish
