Correct Methods Are Needed For Motorcycle Wheel Repair

By Tim Kiv

It is hard to avoid holes in asphalt as drivers steer motorcycles down busy streets in congested traffic but damage occurs nonetheless. More motorcycle wheel repair might be expected because motorcycles bear the brunt of abuse from riders that do not look before casually backing up to park and graze curbs unexpectedly. Some riders damage wheels by forgetting to put the kick stand down. These scrapes are clearly cosmetic but safety specification require wheels to be repaired to be deemed road worthy.

Restoring the tire to original condition is possible but not probable and most technicians will try to return the tire in usable condition. The scooter repairman realizes that a lot is riding on his opinion, and thorough checks are completed before any determination is turned over to the customer.

Wheels for motorcycles must stand up to high performance standards due to the high number of spins that the unit will experience during a normal ride. The tire and alloy frame will have to be checked out thoroughly before a true estimate of damage can be done.

Those spins will place a lot of stress on the metal base but can be repaired if certain standards of repair are met. The axial assembly will need to be inspected for cracks and if any are found, then the technician will have to perform some welding. Using hydraulic pressure, a technician can mount the tire in a simulator and apply enough pressure to disclose invisible cracking that has occurred in the alloy centering.

Well equipped shops will have hydraulic pressure machines that the device is mounted to for the purpose of testing for cracking. Repairs which are completed during this process to correct minor cracks in the alloy parts.

A technician will need time to conduct these tests and others. A visual inspection might provide some of the answers he is searching for, such as damaged wheels that have loosen spokes, or bent framing. Slight bends deserve further consideration and the technician will make checks for lateral and radial run-out.

Then the technician will complete a vertical damage check to rule on radial soundness by using metric measurements and spinning techniques to determine how much the tire is out of round. From this point, hydraulic pressure will be applied to correct each discrepancy and determine what kind of motorcycle wheel repair will be necessary.
